Ezekiel 36:26

You see, He’s like this man who is constantly knocking on the doors of our hearts. But we answer, “Jesus, wait—just wait a second. I am not ready yet. I am almost done. Let me just tidy things up in here before you come in.” He waits and waits but no matter how hard we try to tidy up, it does not seem to get any cleaner. And yet he still waits and waits and knocks and knocks..

Eventually, He takes out the key, the key he had all along, unlocks the door, and enters the home. Cobwebs fill the corners, paint and paper torn from the walls. Broken furniture is found all over the dust-filled wooden floors. Bits and pieces of glass are on the ground. There is little light in the room and it seems as though the light bulbs have been burnt out for some time. He looks at the corner of the room and finds a mirror, which shows a distorted image. We stand there in the middle of the room, trying to not make eye-contact, trying to hide this mess.

Yet He puts His hand on my shoulder and smiles.
“Let’s see what I could do.”

He starts by taking off His sandals. He opens the windows and lets air flow in. He starts taking cobwebs down from the ceilings. He tears off the layers and layers of paper from the walls. He fixes and mends the broken furniture and puts them back in place. He picks pieces of glass off the floors. He places new light bulbs, lighting up the room. He then puts up a new mirror, which reflects a clean home.

Through all this, we stand there watching. He does all this gently and quickly yet it seems as though He is taking His time. It is His joy, His delight to continually tidy up our hearts.

Lastly, He shakes the dust off the sign which had fallen off the door.
He lets it hang on the doorknob—“Welcome to My home.”

“I will give you a new heart, & I will put a new spirit in you. I will take you your stony, stubborn heart & give you a tender, responsive heart.”

“For a heart that does not ache, for a backbone that won’t break, for some steady feet or study ground. To wear wisdom like Solomon’s robe, for the patience and perspective of a man like Job. Just to soar on wings like eagles for no other reason than the bird’s eyes view. And the list gets longer, who I wish I was, and was no longer. To breathe prayers that move the heavens or save hundreds from the flames.
To know my place, to know my name, but the gap grows wider between who I am and all I aspire to be. I never could be good enough to measure up, but You want to take me as I come. You’re the only one that can take me as I am. At the end of myself, at the end of the day, I can find little else but the courage to say, I need You. That’s all, I need You.”

you said you will never leave me
so why then do i live like you’re gone?

i am barabbas i am a thief
i am a murderer washing your feet
i am a traitor holding a gun
but you manage to smile and tell me i am loved
and all the times i’ve hurt you
you never bring up.

alexander - i am barabbas (i live like you’re gone)

Love and Justice by Michael Gungor

“Love can be ferocious.

I love my wife and my baby girl, Amelie,  and if anyone would try to do something to hurt those girls, I would ferociously try to protect them.  If Amelie tries to stick her fingers in an electric socket, I would be ferocious in making sure that she didn’t.  If I needed to, I would yell, or slap her hand away or do anything I needed to do to make sure she didn’t get her fingers in there.

Love IS just.

If my neighbor is being unjustly accused of something by the law, and I don’t step up and seek for his justice, then I do not love my neighbor.  If that woman can not feed her children, and the people around her love her, what do they do?  They seek justice for her.  They help her provide for her children. This is just.  This is loving.  They go hand in hand.  Justice is about setting things to right, and love always seeks justice for those who need it.

It is for these reasons that I believe that God is ONLY loving.

“Loving” doesn’t mean weak or passive.  Love is strong.  Love builds what he needs to build and destroys what he needs to destroy for the sake of his beloved.  Love is passion.  Love is justice.  Love is wrath.  Love is kindness.  God IS love.

Perfect love casts out fear.  This is because love is better than fear.  Fear gets you to obey the speed limit if you suspect that there may be police around, but love for the passengers in your car makes you drive carefully.  Fear can get you to obey rules, but it cannot transform your heart.  Religion that is based in fear says things like ‘well, yes God is love, but….’

No.  God is love.  Period.”
